Probabilistic modeling of musical chord sequences for music analysis

چکیده

The aim of this work is to present a model for representing chord sequences using n-grams, an approach from the language recognition field. Previous works show that there exist various means to represent chords, with more or less accuracy. Underlined limitations in [14] are the modeling of rare chords and the representation of chords using an appropriate alphabet. Recent works in the METISS team [14] proposed different labelling schemes and smoothing methods to overcome these limitations. It has been shown that smoothing provides better generalization of the models, yielding better results in unmet situations. In this work we compare two methods from the language recognition field, in different situations using two different datasets and seven different chord notations. Finally, we present two possible applications of n-gram modeling regarding music classification.

Automatic Chord Recognition Based on Probabilistic Integration of Chord Transition and Bass Pitch Estimation

This paper presents a method that identifies musical chords in polyphonic musical signals. As musical chords mainly represent the harmony of music and are related to other musical elements such as melody and rhythm, the performance of chord recognition should improve if this interrelationship is taken into consideration. Nevertheless, this interrelationship has not been utilized in the literatu...

A Unified Probabilistic Model of Note Combinations and Chord Progressions

This paper presents a unified simultaneous and sequential model for note combinations and chord progressions. In chord progression analysis, n-gram models have often been used for modeling temporal sequences of chord labels (e.g., C major, D minor, and E# seventh). These models require us to specify the value of n and define a limited vocabulary of chord labels. On the other hand, our model is ...

Modeling the Multiscale Structure of Chord Sequences Using Polytopic Graphs

Chord sequences are an essential source of information in a number of MIR tasks. However, beyond the sequential nature of musical content, relations and dependencies within a music segment can be more efficiently modeled as a graph. Polytopic Graphs have been recently introduced to model music structure so as to account for multiscale relationships between events located at metrically homologou...

Aucs / Tr9113 Preliminary Report on the Design of a Constraint-based Musical Planner. Preliminary Report on the Design of a Constraint-based Musical Planner

This work described in this paper forms part of a wider research project, described in Holland (1989), to find ways of using artificial intelligence methods to encourage and facilitate music composition by musical novices. This paper focusses on the key component of a knowledge-based tutoring system under development to help novices learn to compose and analyse musically 'sensible' chord sequen...

Probabilistic models for melodic prediction

Chord progressions are the building blocks from which tonal music is constructed. The choice of a particular representation for chords has a strong impact on statistical modeling of the dependence between chord symbols and the actual sequences of notes in polyphonic music. Melodic prediction is used in this paper as a benchmark task to evaluate the quality of four chord representations using tw...
